Harriet confesses her love for Mr. Knightley

Harriet, in a serious tone, tells Emma that she will never marry. When pressed, she confesses that her heart belongs to a man far superior to Mr. Elton: Mr. Knightley. She believes he has shown her particular attention, especially since he danced with her at the ball. Emma is stunned and horrified. She realizes with a shock that she herself is in love with Mr. Knightley and cannot bear the thought of him marrying anyone else, least of all Harriet.
