Harriet destroys her mementos of Mr. Elton

Harriet comes to Emma with a small box containing her 'most precious treasures'—a piece of court-plaister and the end of a pencil that once belonged to Mr. Elton. She declares she is now over him and wants to burn these relics in Emma's presence. Emma is amused and relieved, believing Harriet is finally cured of her infatuation. However, Harriet's next words reveal that her affections have already found a new, and far more alarming, object.
