During a conversation at Hartfield
Mr. Knightley denies loving Jane Fairfax
In a conversation with Emma and Mrs. Weston, Mr. Knightley firmly denies having any romantic interest in Jane Fairfax. He admits to admiring her but states he has never thought of her in that way and never will. He also points out a fault in her character: her reserve. Emma is greatly relieved by this denial, though she does not fully understand why.
