Mrs. Elton patronizes Jane Fairfax
Mrs. Elton takes Jane Fairfax under her wing, offering her patronage and loudly proclaiming her intention to find Jane a suitable position as a governess. Jane endures this with patient politeness, but Emma can see that she is mortified by Mrs. Elton's condescension. Mr. Knightley defends Jane, pointing out that she accepts Mrs. Elton's attentions because no one else pays her any. This remark stings Emma, who realizes she has neglected Jane.
