Evening of the wedding day
Mr. Knightley visits Hartfield
Mr. Knightley, a sensible man of about thirty-seven and a close family friend, visits Hartfield on the evening of the wedding. He is the elder brother of John Knightley, who is married to Emma's sister Isabella. Mr. Knightley engages in a playful yet pointed conversation with Emma, teasing her about her matchmaking claims regarding Mr. Weston and Miss Taylor. He warns her against meddling, but Emma defends her role, declaring her intention to find a wife for Mr. Elton, the young vicar. This exchange establishes the dynamic between Emma and Mr. Knightley, where he is one of the few who sees and points out her faults.
