The day after the Donwell party

The Box Hill picnic

A large party, including the Eltons, the Westons, Frank Churchill, Jane Fairfax, and the Bateses, goes on a picnic to Box Hill. The day is marked by tension and discord. Frank Churchill flirts openly with Emma, who responds in kind, partly out of pique. Emma, in a moment of thoughtless cruelty, makes a witty but cutting remark to the harmless Miss Bates. Mr. Knightley is deeply displeased and later reproaches Emma for her unkindness.
