After the confession
Emma avoids Harriet
Emma is in a state of turmoil. She cannot bear to see Harriet and is consumed with anxiety about Mr. Knightley's possible feelings for her friend. She writes to Harriet, asking her not to visit Hartfield for a while, a request Harriet meekly obeys. Emma spends her days in agonized reflection, reviewing every past interaction with Mr. Knightley and fearing that she has lost him to Harriet.
