Jane Returns to Thornfield
Jane leaves Marsh End and travels to Thornfield, determined to find Mr. Rochester. She arrives to find the house a blackened ruin. She learns from the innkeeper that Bertha Mason set the house on fire and died in the blaze. Mr. Rochester, in a heroic attempt to save her, was severely injured: he lost his sight and one hand. He is now living at Ferndean Manor. This news fills Jane with both horror and a renewed sense of purpose.
