the next day at Gateshead
Mr. Lloyd Visits Jane
After her fit, Jane wakes in the nursery to find the apothecary Mr. Lloyd attending her. He is kind and gentle, and Jane confides in him about her unhappiness at Gateshead. She tells him about the red-room incident and her mistreatment by the Reeds. Mr. Lloyd suggests to Mrs. Reed that Jane might benefit from going to school. This conversation plants the first seed of hope for escape in Jane's mind and sets in motion the plan to send her away from Gateshead.
