Typhus Epidemic at Lowood

A typhus epidemic breaks out at Lowood, caused by the poor conditions and semi-starvation. Many girls fall ill and die. The school is transformed into a hospital, and the usual strict rules are relaxed. Mr. Brocklehurst's mismanagement is exposed, leading to reforms. Jane remains healthy and enjoys the newfound freedom. The epidemic, however, claims the life of her dear friend Helen Burns, who dies of consumption. Helen's death is a profound loss for Jane, but her serene faith leaves a lasting spiritual impression.
