Jane's Wandering and Starvation
Jane wanders destitute across the moors, having accidentally left her small parcel of belongings on the coach. She has no money and no friends. She tries to find work or food but is repeatedly turned away. She spends two nights sleeping in the open, suffering from hunger and cold. She nearly starves to death. This period of extreme hardship tests her physical and mental endurance to the limit and represents the lowest point in her life.
