Adam Meets Cyrus in Washington

While waiting to change trains in Kansas City, Adam receives orders to report to the Secretary of War's office in Washington. There, he meets his father, Cyrus, who has become a great and influential man. Cyrus tries to persuade Adam to stay in Washington and use his influence, but Adam refuses and asks to return to his regiment. Adam sees through his father's play-acting and feels a faint distaste for him.
