Adam and Cathy Marry

Adam, deeply in love with Cathy, asks her to marry him. She accepts, seeing him as a source of protection and money. They are married by a justice of the peace. Charles is furious and accuses Cathy of being a whore. Adam, believing Charles is jealous, decides to take Cathy and leave the farm. He sells his share to Charles and prepares to move to California.
