Adam's Lettuce Venture Fails

Adam, seeking a purpose, invests heavily in a scheme to ship lettuce from the Salinas Valley to New York in refrigerated train cars. The venture is a disaster due to a series of accidents: a snow slide, unseasonable warm weather, and a shipping mix-up. The lettuce arrives as a rotten slop, and Adam loses most of his fortune. The failure brings public ridicule upon the family.
