About thirty years before the turn of the century
The Hamilton Family Arrives
Samuel Hamilton, a young Irish immigrant, arrives in the Salinas Valley with his wife Liza. Samuel is a man of great energy, invention, and charm, but he has no talent for making money. He homesteads a barren, rocky quarter-section of land east of King City, which will never provide a good living. Over the years, Liza gives birth to nine children, and Samuel supports his growing family by working as a blacksmith, well-digger, and inventor. The Hamiltons are poor but respected, and Samuel becomes a beloved figure in the valley for his wisdom, humor, and kindness.
