James Grew's Suicide

Cathy's Latin teacher, James Grew, becomes infatuated with her. He visits the Ames house late one night, desperate to speak to Mr. Ames, but is turned away. The next morning, he is found dead in the church, having shot himself. Cathy subtly plants a rumor that Grew had been in trouble in Boston, deflecting suspicion from herself. This is the first death directly caused by Cathy's manipulation.
