Charles Beats Adam

After Adam accidentally beats Charles at a game of peewee, Charles flies into a jealous rage and beats him severely. Later, Charles returns with a hatchet, intending to kill Adam, but Adam hides in a ditch. The attack is driven by Charles's desperate love for their father, Cyrus, and his belief that Cyrus loves Adam more. This event establishes the deep, violent rivalry between the brothers and Adam's lifelong fear of Charles.
