Adam Serves in the Indian Wars

Adam serves five years in the cavalry, fighting in the Indian Wars. He is a good soldier but develops a deep revulsion for violence. He deliberately misses his targets and is commended for bravery for bringing in wounded men. He feels a growing nonviolence that becomes a prejudice. His experiences in the army, particularly the killing and the piles of bodies, leave him traumatized and haunted.
