Samuel Hamilton's Decline and Death

Samuel Hamilton ages and his health declines after the death of his beloved daughter, Una. He loses his vitality and his joy. His children, concerned, arrange for him and Liza to visit them. Samuel knows he is going away to die. He visits Adam one last time, telling him the truth about Cathy: that she is living in Salinas as a whore named Kate. This revelation is intended to shock Adam out of his passive grief.
