Mr. Edwards Attacks Cathy

Mr. Edwards discovers Cathy's true nature and her past, including the fire. He takes her to a small town in Connecticut, intending to punish her. He beats her savagely with a quirt and a stone, leaving her for dead. He then flees in panic. Cathy, though badly injured, drags herself to a farmhouse, where she is found at dawn.
