Later that night
Fagin Tells Sikes of Nancy's Betrayal
Fagin, enraged by Nancy's betrayal, waits for Sikes to return. He tells Sikes that Nancy has 'peached' on them all, revealing their plans and descriptions to outsiders. He goads Sikes by describing how Nancy gave him laudanum to sneak out. Sikes, in a fit of blind fury, rushes out of Fagin's house, determined to confront and kill Nancy. Fagin's manipulation of Sikes is the final, most despicable act of his villainy, directly leading to the novel's most tragic event.
