Oliver Returned to Fagin's Den

Sikes and Nancy drag Oliver through Smithfield market to a new, secret hideout. There, they are greeted by Fagin, the Dodger, and Charley Bates, who mock Oliver's fine new clothes and the books he was carrying. Fagin and Sikes argue over the five-pound note, which Sikes claims for himself. Oliver, in despair, begs them to return the books and money to Mr. Brownlow, but Fagin only laughs, knowing that the theft will confirm Mr. Brownlow's worst suspicions. Oliver is stripped of his new clothes and locked in a dark room, his brief period of happiness now a distant memory.
