The Journey to Chertsey

Sikes and Oliver travel through the waking city, passing through Smithfield market and then taking a cart to Hampton. They walk through the countryside, stopping at a public house for dinner, where Oliver falls asleep from exhaustion. They then continue their journey by cart, passing through Sunbury and Shepperton in the dark. Oliver, terrified and bewildered, fears that Sikes has brought him to a lonely place to murder him. Finally, they arrive at a solitary, ruinous house, which is their destination. The journey is a harrowing experience for Oliver, filled with fear and uncertainty.
