Fates of the Other Characters

The novel concludes with brief accounts of the other characters. Monks squanders his inheritance and dies in prison in the New World. Noah Claypole becomes a professional informer. Mr. and Mrs. Bumble, stripped of their positions, end up as paupers in the same workhouse where they once ruled. Charley Bates, reformed by the horror of Sikes's crime, becomes an honest and prosperous grazier. The fates of the characters reinforce the novel's moral themes: virtue is rewarded, and vice is punished.
