Oliver's Ninth Birthday and Mr. Bumble's Visit

On Oliver's ninth birthday, Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle, visits Mrs. Mann's farm to inform her that Oliver is to be returned to the main workhouse. Bumble reveals that he invented the surname 'Twist' by following an alphabetical naming system for foundlings. Oliver is taken away from the only home he has known, experiencing a profound sense of loneliness as he leaves behind his only friends, the other pauper children. This event marks Oliver's transition from the relative obscurity of the farm to the more public and harsh world of the workhouse.
