Late that night
The Burglary at Chertsey
Sikes and his accomplice, Toby Crackit, force Oliver to climb through a small window into the house to unlock the front door for them. Oliver, realizing he is being used for a burglary, resolves to alarm the family instead. As he creeps towards the stairs, Sikes senses his intention and shouts for him to come back. The alarm is raised; a shot is fired from inside the house, and Oliver is hit and wounded. Sikes and Crackit drag him back through the window and flee, leaving Oliver bleeding and unconscious in a ditch. This event is the climax of Oliver's victimization by the gang.
