Shortly after Oliver's recapture
Mr. Bumble Goes to London and Meets Mr. Brownlow
Mr. Bumble travels to London on parish business. While there, he sees Mr. Brownlow's advertisement offering a reward for information about Oliver. He goes to Mr. Brownlow's house and, motivated by the reward, delivers a damning account of Oliver's character, portraying him as a vicious, ungrateful, and treacherous foundling from a low and vicious family. Mr. Brownlow, heartbroken, is convinced of Oliver's guilt and orders Mrs. Bedwin never to mention the boy's name again. This event solidifies the false narrative of Oliver's wickedness and deepens the mystery surrounding his past.
