Oliver's Happy Life in the Country
After his recovery, Oliver accompanies the Maylies to a cottage in a beautiful, peaceful village. He thrives in the fresh air and natural surroundings, learning to read and write under the tutelage of a kind old clergyman. He spends his days helping in the garden, walking with Rose, and listening to her play the piano. This idyllic period is the happiest of Oliver's life, a stark contrast to the misery of the workhouse and the terror of the criminal underworld. He becomes deeply attached to his benefactors, especially Rose.
