Sikes's Last Stand at Jacob's Island

Sikes returns to London and seeks refuge in a squalid hideout on Jacob's Island, a filthy slum in Southwark. He is joined by Toby Crackit and other criminals, but they are all terrified of him. Charley Bates, horrified by the murder, tries to raise the alarm. A massive crowd, led by Mr. Brownlow and Harry Maylie, surrounds the building. Sikes, trapped, attempts to escape by lowering himself from the roof with a rope. As he does so, he is startled by the vision of Nancy's eyes, loses his balance, and accidentally hangs himself. The dog Bull's-eye, trying to follow, falls and dies. This is the dramatic and fitting end for the murderer.
