Fagin and Sikes Plan the Chertsey Burglary
Fagin visits Sikes to discuss a planned burglary at a house in Chertsey. The original plan has failed because the servants cannot be bribed. Sikes proposes a new plan to break in from the outside, but he needs a small boy to climb through a tiny window. Fagin suggests Oliver, seeing it as the perfect opportunity to implicate him in a serious crime and bind him forever to the gang. Nancy is present and, despite her earlier defiance, seems to go along with the plan. This decision sets the stage for the most dangerous event in Oliver's young life.
