Oliver Goes Out with the Dodger and Charley

Eager for fresh air and to prove himself, Oliver finally obtains Fagin's permission to go out 'to work' with the Dodger and Charley Bates. The three boys saunter through the streets of Clerkenwell. The Dodger and Charley engage in petty theft, stealing apples and onions, which disturbs Oliver. They then spot an old gentleman reading at a bookstall. The Dodger picks the gentleman's pocket, stealing a handkerchief, and he and Charley immediately flee. Oliver, horrified and realizing the truth about his companions, panics and runs, only to be mistaken for the thief by the pursuing crowd.
