Pierre de Mirbeau

Satan

Pierre de Mirbeau is Charles de C...'s childhood friend, business associate, and principal covert collaborator in the search for the missing Castor cameo. A wealthy speculator whose influence extends beyond legitimate business, he connects elite Parisian circles to clandestine networks and helps turn Charles's interest in the jewel into an operation reaching across the Atlantic.

Position and Connections

Pierre and Charles share regional origins and a longstanding association in opaque business dealings. In Paris, they move within a confidential, privileged circle that meets in the Triangle d’Or near the Arc de Triomphe. Their partnership is built on both personal history and shared access: Pierre is not simply an adviser, but a trusted associate who can draw on contacts beyond Charles's own social world.

Pierre is also a childhood friend of Charles who became his business associate and close accomplice in the capital. His wealth came from real-estate and stock-market speculation, alongside more clandestine activity. The novel places him where conventional financial power meets hidden exploitation, making his social reach part of the machinery of the plot rather than mere background.

Illicit Network

Pierre's concealed business includes trafficking in young people taken from poor countries for sexual exploitation. The account also links him to a wealthy American who used a sumptuous apartment overlooking the Champs-Élysées to gather powerful and celebrated guests and procure young people for them. Pierre brings Charles into this setting, demonstrating how his access to elite spaces is entangled with criminal activity.

These operations have also given Pierre a network of underworld contacts. Among them is a former police officer who had served briefly in French counterintelligence. Pierre's usefulness to Charles rests in part on this capacity to locate intermediaries suited to discreet work across borders; the novel presents the network as both a product of his illicit dealings and a resource he can mobilize.

The Search for the Cameo

After learning that the Castor cameo, missing for two centuries, might be in Canada, Charles agrees with Pierre that the inquiry should proceed indirectly. They plan to use one or more intermediaries, establish a local connection, discover who might possess the cameo and where it is held, and ultimately obtain it. Rather than approach the D’Anjou family openly, they seek a way into its secrets through people on the ground.

Pierre's network supplies the first operative: the former officer, whose real name is Franck Aubry. Fluent in English and Spanish as well as his native language, Aubry can work under different identities and specializes in North America. Pierre and Charles send him to Montréal. The plan thus advances from private knowledge of the cameo's possible location to an active investigation, with Pierre serving as the broker who connects Charles's ambition to a covert agent.

Narrative Role

Pierre is defined less through an independent personal history than through the routes of influence he opens for Charles. His financial speculations, concealed criminal enterprise, elite access, and international contacts converge in the cameo plot. The contrast between his polished social position and the exploitation underlying his network makes secrecy itself a form of power: he can move between respectable circles and illicit channels, enabling Charles to pursue the jewel without appearing directly. The evidence follows Pierre through the planning and dispatch of Aubry, establishing his role in the operation without resolving its later outcome.
