T.A. 3019
T.A. 3019 is the single most consequential year in the Third Age, the annus mirabilis in which the entire War of the Ring reaches its climax and resolution. Within these twelve months, the Fellowship of the Ring is broken, the ancient kingdoms of Rohan and Gondor are brought to the brink of ruin and then saved, the One Ring is cast into the fires of Mount Doom, and Sauron is utterly overthrown. The year's events do not merely conclude a war; they terminate the Third Age itself and inaugurate the Fourth Age and the Dominion of Men, making T.A. 3019 the hinge upon which the entire history of Middle-earth turns.
The Breaking of the Fellowship and the Fall of Gandalf
The year opens with the Company of the Ring having left Rivendell on December 25 of the previous year. In January, the Company's journey through the wilds reaches its first catastrophe. After being turned back from the snows of Caradhras, they are attacked by Wolves in the early hours of January 13, and that same night they reach the West-gate of Moria, where Gollum begins to trail the Ring-bearer. The passage through Moria culminates on January 15 at the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, where Gandalf confronts the Balrog and falls into the abyss, crying "Fly, you fools!" The Company, grief-stricken, reaches Nimrodel late that night. Gandalf, however, does not die; he pursues the Balrog to the peak of Zirakzigil on January 23, casts it down on January 25, and passes away, his body lying on the peak. He returns to life on February 15, lying in a trance, and is borne to Lórien by Gwaihir on February 17.
The Breaking of the Fellowship and the Death of Boromir
February sees the Company's brief respite in Lothlórien, where on February 15 Frodo looks into the Mirror of Galadriel. They depart on February 16, with Gollum in hiding on the west bank observing their departure. After their boats are attacked near Sarn Gebir on February 23, the Company passes the Argonath and camps at Parth Galen on February 25, the same day as the First Battle of the Fords of Isen, where Théodred, son of Théoden, is slain. On February 26, the Fellowship is broken. Boromir is killed defending Meriadoc and Peregrin; his horn is heard in Minas Tirith. The two hobbits are captured by Orcs, and Frodo and Samwise enter the eastern Emyn Muil. Aragorn sets out in pursuit of the Orcs that evening. On February 29, Meriadoc and Pippin escape and meet Treebeard, while the Rohirrim attack and destroy the Orcs at sunrise; Frodo descends from the Emyn Muil and meets Gollum, and Faramir sees the funeral boat of Boromir. The Entmoot begins the same day.
The Campaigns of March: Helm's Deep and Isengard
March is the most crowded month of the war. On March 1, Frodo begins the passage of the Dead Marshes at dawn, and Aragorn meets Gandalf the White, who has returned from death. On March 2, Gandalf comes to Edoras and heals Théoden, and the Rohirrim ride west against Saruman; the Second Battle of the Fords of Isen is fought, with Erkenbrand defeated. The Entmoot ends that afternoon, and the Ents march on Isengard, reaching it at night. On March 3, Théoden retreats to Helm's Deep, and the Battle of the Hornburg begins, while the Ents complete the destruction of Isengard. On March 4, Théoden and Gandalf set out for Isengard, and Frodo reaches the slag-mounds on the edge of the Desolation of the Morannon. On March 5, Théoden reaches Isengard at noon and holds a parley with Saruman in Orthanc; a winged Nazgûl passes over the camp at Dol Baran, and Gandalf sets out with Peregrin for Minas Tirith. Frodo hides in sight of the Morannon and leaves at dusk. On March 6, Aragorn is overtaken by the Dúnedain in the early hours.
The Fall of Sauron and the End of the War
The remainder of the year belongs to the great battles of Gondor and the final destruction of the Ring. The Siege of Minas Tirith and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields take place in March, culminating in the death of the Witch-king at the hands of Éowyn and the arrival of Aragorn with the Army of the Dead. The Captains of the West then march to the Black Gate, where the Battle at the Black Gate is fought on March 25, the same day that Frodo and Samwise reach the Cracks of Doom and the One Ring is destroyed. Sauron is overthrown, the Nazgûl are unmade, and the war ends. The year closes with the crowning of Aragorn as King Elessar, the healing of the Shire after the Scouring, and the departure of the Ring-bearers from the Grey Havens in September, marking the definitive end of the Third Age and the beginning of the Fourth Age and the Dominion of Men.
The Significance of T.A. 3019
T.A. 3019 is not merely a year of battles; it is the year in which the long defeat of the Elves and their allies is finally reversed. The destruction of the Ring fulfills the quest that began with Isildur's failure at the Gladden Fields, and the crowning of Aragorn restores the line of Elendil to the throne of Gondor and Arnor, reuniting the kingdoms. The year's events also mark the passing of the Elves from the stage of history, as the Three Rings lose their power with the destruction of the One, and the age of Men begins. The year is thus both an ending and a beginning, a point of absolute rupture in the history of Middle-earth that gives the entire narrative of the Third Age its meaning and its resolution.
