The Double Rations
The Second Company is at rest five miles behind the front. They have been relieved and are enjoying a rare windfall of double rations of beef, beans, sausage, bread, and tobacco, due to a miscalculation by the quartermaster after heavy losses. The cook, Ginger, is reluctant to issue the surplus, but the company commander intervenes, ordering him to serve all the rations. The men are satisfied and at peace, savoring the unexpected abundance.
