The Kaiser's Review
The Kaiser reviews the troops. The men are subjected to intense inspections and drills. Tjaden is puzzled by the concept of imperial authority, leading to a discussion about the causes of the war. The men conclude that the war is a senseless tragedy driven by the powerful, not the common people. The review is a hollow spectacle that underscores their powerlessness.
