Paul, Müller, and Kropp visit their wounded comrade Franz Kemmerich at St. Joseph's Hospital. Kemmerich has had his leg amputated and is clearly dying. Müller covets Kemmerich's fine English boots, knowing he will not survive. The visit is painful; Kemmerich is feverish and distressed, and the orderlies are indifferent. Paul promises to return the next morning, but they all know Kemmerich will not last the night.
