The Training Camp on the Moors
Paul reports to a training camp on the moors. The routine is monotonous, but he finds solace in the natural beauty of the landscape. He is assigned to guard Russian prisoners, and he feels a deep sympathy for them, recognizing their shared humanity. He gives them cigarettes and listens to one play the violin. The experience deepens his disillusionment with the war and its arbitrary divisions.
