The Offensive Preparations
Rumors of an offensive spread. The men are sent to the front early and pass a stack of new yellow coffins, a grim omen. The enemy artillery is strengthened, and the men endure a constant bombardment. They fight rats that gnaw their bread, and the tension is unbearable. The recruits are terrified, and one has a fit of claustrophobia. The men are hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, waiting for the attack.
