after the bombardment
The French Attack
The French attack begins. The men, driven by a primal instinct for survival, fight with savage ferocity. They throw hand-grenades and use spades and bayonets. Paul kills a French soldier in hand-to-hand combat, but is haunted by the man's eyes. The attack is repulsed, and the men capture the enemy trench, seizing provisions. They are exhausted and numb, but the immediate danger has passed.
