after the wounding
The Hospital Experience
In the Catholic hospital, Paul and Kropp witness the horrors of war's aftermath: amputations, deaths, and the callousness of some medical staff. They meet Josef Hamacher, who has a 'shooting licence' due to a head wound, and Lewandowski, whose wife visits him for a conjugal visit. Kropp's leg is amputated, and he becomes despondent. Paul undergoes surgery and slowly recovers.
