After a dinner party on January 8th where Jekyll seemed his old self, the doctor suddenly shuts himself away. On January 12th and 14th, Utterson is refused admittance. Poole reports that the doctor is confined to the house and sees no one. Utterson becomes worried by this return to solitude.
