after Jekyll's reclusion
Utterson Visits the Dying Lanyon
Mr. Utterson visits Dr. Lanyon and is shocked by his appearance: Lanyon looks like a dying man, pale and wasted, with a look of deep-seated terror. Lanyon refuses to speak of Jekyll, calling him dead to him, and says he has had a shock from which he will never recover. He gives Utterson a sealed envelope, marked to be opened only after Jekyll's death or disappearance.
