Utterson Visits Jekyll's Home
Mr. Utterson goes to Dr. Jekyll's house in the square and is admitted by the butler, Poole. He learns that Hyde has a key to the laboratory door and that the servants have orders to obey him. Jekyll is not at home, and Utterson leaves with a heavy heart, brooding on the possibility that Jekyll is being blackmailed for some old sin. He resolves to help his friend if Jekyll will allow it.
