Utterson Confronts Hyde
Mr. Utterson steps out from the entry of the court and accosts the small, plainly dressed man who approaches the door, identifying himself as Edward Hyde. Hyde is initially startled but quickly becomes cool and sneering. Utterson asks to see his face, and Hyde defiantly shows himself, leaving Utterson with a profound sense of disgust and loathing. Hyde gives his address in Soho before unlocking the door and disappearing into the house. Utterson is left with a strong impression of Hyde's inhuman, troglodytic appearance and fears for Jekyll's safety.
