Convinced by Poole's testimony, Mr. Utterson decides to break into the cabinet. Armed with a kitchen poker, and Poole with an axe, they approach the door. Utterson calls out to Jekyll, but the voice that answers is Hyde's. Poole swings the axe, and after five blows, the door bursts open.
