Late morning of the third day
Santiago Sees the Marlin
On the third circle, Santiago sees the marlin's dark shadow pass under the boat, then its huge tail and purple stripes. The fish is enormous, larger than he imagined. The old man is awed but remains focused. He continues to gain line, and the fish comes closer with each turn. Santiago's hands are raw, and his vision blurs, but he knows he must get the fish close enough for the harpoon.
