Beloved seduces Paul D

Beloved, who has been increasingly possessive of Sethe, begins to target Paul D. She appears in the cold house where he has been sleeping and demands that he touch her 'on the inside part' and call her by her name. Paul D, despite his resistance, is unable to refuse her. The encounter is not one of pleasure but of compulsion, and it leaves him feeling shamed and powerless. Beloved's power over him seems to be connected to the trauma he has buried in a 'tobacco tin' in his chest, which she forces open. The experience further destabilizes Paul D and his relationship with Sethe.
