Stamp Paid shows the newspaper clipping
Stamp Paid, a friend of the family, shows Paul D a newspaper clipping from eighteen years earlier that reports Sethe's infanticide. The clipping includes a drawing of Sethe and describes how she killed her baby daughter to prevent her from being returned to slavery. Paul D, who had not known the full story, is horrified. He confronts Sethe, who defends her actions as an act of love and protection. Paul D, unable to accept her reasoning, tells her that her love is 'too thick' and that she has 'two feet, not four.' The argument creates a rift between them, and Paul D leaves 124.
