Paul D reveals Halle's fate

During a heated argument about Beloved, Paul D reveals to Sethe what happened to her husband, Halle, on the day of her escape. He tells her that Halle was hiding in the barn loft and witnessed the nephews stealing her milk, a sight that broke him. Later, Paul D saw Halle sitting by the churn, his face smeared with butter, completely catatonic. This revelation shatters Sethe's hope that Halle might still be alive and well, and she is devastated by the knowledge that he saw her violation and did nothing. The news deepens her trauma and her sense of abandonment.
