Denver's jealousy and the carnival
Denver, who has been isolated and lonely for years, resents Paul D's presence and the attention he receives from her mother. She questions how long he will stay, leading to a tense confrontation. Sethe, however, is determined to make a life with Paul D, and the three of them attend a carnival together on a day reserved for Black people. The outing is a rare moment of joy and community, as they enjoy the spectacle and the simple pleasure of being together. The shadows of their hands holding hands on the ground seem to promise a new beginning.
